How should schools assess their students and what qualifications do we need to support our young people and employers? The Independent Review of Qualifications & Assessment was established to ensure that the achievements of all learners aged 15-18 are recognised as fair & equitable. Looking to the future, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills announced in October 2021 the intention to reform qualifications and assessments. In the last few years there have been a number of reviews and reports which have made recommendations about our education system and assessments. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, a renewed debate around assessment has also taken place following the cancellation of National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher exams in 2020 and 2021 The reports include the:

There will be the opportunity to hear about careers and pathways into the sector, the journey to Net Zero ,learn about the increased use of VR, drone or heat sensing technologies, sample traditional and sustainable building skills, and attend workshops on community engagement, design, architecture and civil engineering. There will be talks and interactive workshops to encourage and support young people (16- 24) who want to explore careers in the sector, with groups of S5 & S6 pupils attending from local schools. There are workshops aimed at employers and professionals looking at developments in the sector, including sustainable construction, the use of digital, apprenticeships, regional case studies, the future workforce and opportunities for training. It is all taking place 10am-2.30pm on Wednesday 30th November at the Borders College campus, Galashiels. RHET are running a STEM packed educators workshop visit to a robotic dairy farm Exclusively for teachers this event will highlight the STEM utilised on a dairy farm and provide ideas for classroom engagement. The training is open to secondary and upper primary teachers and the session will fit particularly well with STEM, geography and health and wellbeing. This is an opportunity to meet with Colin Laird, who manages the family farm, and discover how he is using modern technology and robots to improve the efficiency, health and productivity of the farm. They have a herd of over a 1000 dairy cows and milk 530 daily, undertaken by 10 robots.
