Apprentice steel-fixer - hawick flood protection

In this role you will learn amongst other things
​

  • Levelling and setting out of the work area, following engineering plans
  • To use hand and power tools to cut and bend bars or mesh
  • To tie rebar - reinforcement bars - together with wire, clips or welds to build up sections
  • Fit spacers and 'chairs'
  • Safe Handling and storing of steel-fixing materials 
  • Reinforced concrete technology
  • Mobile Tower and Small Tools including abrasive wheels 
  • Cut and bend reinforced steel 
  • Position and fix reinforcement steel 

During the apprenticeship programme you will

  • Gain knowledge of building and construction
  • Learn to be thorough and pay attention to detail
  • Demonstrate patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Have the ability to work well with others
  • Demonstrate the ability to use your initiative
  • Use physical skills like movement and coordination
  • Show the ability to work well with your hands
  • Gain knowledge of public safety and security
  • Be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device
 
Work Environment

You could work on high rise buildings, on a construction site or on other structures.
You will be required to wear safety clothing and use safety equipment.

Career Path & Progression

As an experienced steel fixer, you could become a site safety supervisor or engineering technician, or move into related areas like welding, scaffolding or training.  Good steel fixers are in great demand all over the world.
 
Minimum Qualifications

You will need a minimum of English, Mathematics and a Science/Technology at Nat 5 or equivalent.
Must be physically fit, be able to work in confined spaces, be keen to develop practical skills and work as a team player.  You must be hard working, reliable, punctual, have good communication skills and the ability to work alone on your own initiative or as part of a team.
